Daniel Perez has been recognized with the Science Spectrum Trailblazer Award, sponsored by U.S. Black Engineer and Information Technology magazine. The award, which was presented to Perez at the 26th Black Engineer of the Year Awards Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Conference, recognizes minority men and women who are helping to create opportunities for others in science, research, technology and development. Perez is a mechanical engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport.
PBN: What are some of your projects and responsibilities at NUWC?
PEREZ: My work is focused on the use of numerical analysis methods for the design and development of sonar systems for the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet. I’ve worked on both the large aperture bow array and the conformal hull array sonars for the Virginia-class submarines. In all of these projects, I primarily study the response of structural elements to both mechanical and acoustic excitation for the express purpose of evaluating self-noise and acoustic performance. I have also devoted my time to NUWC’s recruiting efforts at my alma mater, the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez. Having been an intern at NUWC myself, I understand and appreciate the value in having a mentor and support network that is in place from the moment of recruitment.
PBN: How is one chosen for the Trailblazers award? What does it mean to you to be selected for this award?
PEREZ: The Trailblazers award is awarded to minority men and women for their contributions in science, research, technology and development that continue to help create new opportunities for others in these fields. I was nominated by my management chain for my extensive work applying numerical methods to the design, analysis and development of navy sonar systems, as well as my involvement in NUWC’s continuing relationship with the University of Puerto Rico.
PBN: Did you attend the conference on Feb. 16?
PEREZ: Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the conference on Feb. 16 due to other commitments that kept me in Rhode Island. So I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my mentors and co-workers who, through their hard work and support, have helped make this award possible. It is a pleasure to be part of such a successful and dedicated team. •
