PROVIDENCE – A “newly reimagined” “The Phantom Of The Opera” will launch its North American tour at the Providence Performing Arts Center in November.

The new production, with reinvented staging and scenic design, debuted in March 2012 in Plymouth, England, and will be the first ‘Phantom’ production to tour the United States in three years.

Three previous “Phantom” U.S. National Tours have grossed over $1.5 billion in combined box office sales.

“It’s wonderful to have a new production of Phantom touring America in the same year that the show celebrates 25 years on Broadway,” said “Phantom” composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, in a statement.

The new production is directed by Laurence Connor, who directed the 25th anniversary production of “Les Miserables” that now is on tour and headed for Broadway and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

The tour will play more than 20 multi-week engagements. A complete scheduled will be announced soon.

The “Phantom Of The Opera” has won more than 70 major theatre awards including seven 1988 Tony Awards including for best musical.

The musical is based on the novel “Le Fantome de L’Opera” and tells the story of a masked figure who terrorizes performers at the Paris Opera House until he falls in love with soprano Christine and turns his attention to making her a star.

The show is the first major one announced for PPAC’s next season and the first national tour launched here since the passage of the theater tax credit which gives incentives to pre or post-Broadway productions to launch here.
