CALL FOR CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

Friends of Ballard park will accept donations of Christmas tree lights and lamps for use in its eighth annual Illuminated Garden to be held in February. The garden is a free event featuring thousands of lights displayed in trees and on the features of Ballard Park’s 3-acre quarry meadow during Newport’s Winter Festival. Lights in working order of all colors, shapes and sizes will be accepted. Lamps should be 2-feet tall or higher. The organization is also looking for thoroughly cleaned one-gallon milk jugs, which be used by Newport elementary school students to build igloos that will also be displayed in the park. Donations will be acknowledged with a receipt that can be used for tax purposes. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Friends of Ballard Park’s office, 226 Bellevue Ave., Newport. DIP FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

The 14th annual Dip for Multiple Sclerosis will be held at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Participants and supporters will gather at Tara Joyce’s Family Pub, 907 Matunuck Beach Road, Matunuck, before taking a dip in the ocean. During the past 13 years, the events has attracted hundreds and raised more than $102,000 for the Rhode Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. PENGUIN PLUNGE FOR LIBRARY

The Tiverton Yacht Club will host its annual Penguin Plunge to benefit the Tiverton Library Building Fund at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Participants will take the plunge at Grinnell’s Beach, Main Road, Tiverton. Hot coffee and cocoa will be available. After, participants can gather at a reception at Lil Bear Sports Club, 983 Main Road, Tiverton. All are welcome. $10 suggested donation. Donations can be made payable to Tiverton Library New Building Fund at the Essex Library, 238 Highland Road Tiverton or at the event. SHRINERS NEW YEAR’S EVE GALA

The Rhode Island Shriners will host a New Year’s Eve Gala at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31. The gala will be held in the Imperial Room at 1 Rhodes Place, Cranston. The evening includes dinner with choice of entrée, dancing, a DJ, complimentary champagne toast, continental breakfast buffet at midnight, noisemakers and hats. Cost: $55 per person, includes service charge and taxes. This event is open to those 21 and older only. Reservations are required. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS SHOW

Courthouse Center Stage, formerly known as Courthouse Center for the Arts, will present “Home for the Holidays: A Stocking-Full of Songs, Stories and Surprises!” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, 4 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23. The show will be held at the Courthouse, 3481 Kingstown Road, West Kingston. This annual holiday event features professional and community talent. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
