SORI PENGUIN PLUNGE
Special Olympics of Rhode Island will host its 37th annual penguin plunge at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 1 at Roger Wheeler State Beach, 100 Sand Hill Cove Road, Narragansett. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the pavilion. Participants are asked to make a minimum donation of $50 to benefit the sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Pawtucket Arts Collaborative is currently hosting its annual 10 x 10 exhibition and fundraiser at The Mill Gallery, 560 Mineral Spring Ave., Pawtucket. Patrons can browse more than 60 10” x 10” paintings created by collaborative members especially for this exhibition. All works are available for purchase for $150 each. IYRS SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
The International Yacht Restoration School has extended its deadline for applications for three scholarships available for programs beginning this spring. Those interested must submit required materials no later than Sunday, Jan. 6 for first-priority consideration, or no later than Friday, Feb. 15 for the final deadline. Selection for all scholarships is based on merit and financial need. Awards include The Van Beuren Charitable Trust Scholarship, $50,000 to be awarded to a student who is a Rhode Island resident; The Marine Trades Scholarship for Women, $5,000 to be awarded to a female student pursuing an education in the marine trades (special consideration will be given to women entering the field or changing careers); and The Composite Technology Scholarship, $5,000 to be awarded to a student in the composite technology program. Additional need-based scholarships are also available and will be granted in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. NONPROFIT TRAINING: GAMBLING
The Newport Initiative for Nonprofit Training will offer a seminar on gambling from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdsay, Jan. 8, at Child and Family, 31 John Clarke Road, Middletown. Thomas Broffman will help to expand participants’ knowledge of gambling before Rhode Island’s first full-scale casino will open in July. Participants will learn about the prevalence of problem gambling and the diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling. This program is open to all. The Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence at the Rhode Island Foundation will offer a speed-mentoring breakfast for emerging leaders of nonprofit organizations from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31 at the Rhode Island Foundation, 1 Union Station, Providence. During the event, up to 30 emerging leaders will spend about 30 minutes with three nonprofit executive directors who will share their personal stories of leadership.
