LAW SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

The Rhode Island Bar Foundation is now accepting applications for its Thomas F. Black Jr. Memorial Scholarships. Two $20,000 scholarships will be awarded to Rhode Island residents enrolling as first-year students in an American Bar Assocation-accredited law school for the academic year beginning September 2013. Awards are granted on the basis of financial need, superior academic performance, community and public service, and demonstrated contacts with and commitment to the State of Rhode Island. Scholarships are non-renewable and cover the first year of law school only. EITC/VITA CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF

The Providence Earned Income Tax Credit/Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Initiative will kick off its 12th annual Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 14 at Federal Hill House, 9 Courtland St., Providence. The campaign raises awareness about the Earned Income Tax Credit for eligible families, offers free tax return preparation through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and encourages recipients to utilize their credits for savings and building assets through ongoing financial literacy education programs. Mayor Angel Tavares, the United Way of Rhode Island and other community leaders are expected to be in attendance. COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID SESSIONS

College Goal Rhode Island will host the first of several sessions for students seeking assistance in applying for college financial aid from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Rogers High School, 15 Wickham Road, Newport. Additional sessions will be held at later dates in Providence, Wakefield, Pawtucket and West Warwick. College Goal Rhode Island provides free information and assistance to families applying for college financial aid. During the events, financial aid professionals will assist college-bound students and their families in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is required for students seeking federal financial aid, including grants and loans, at educational institutions nationwide. It is also the form Rhode Island residents complete to determine eligibility for Rhode Island State Grant Programs. Students should bring their parent or legal guardian in addition the parent’s completed 2012 federal tax return, 2012 W-2 forms and all other 2012 income and benefits information. If students worked during 2012, they should bring their completed 2012 federal tax return and any other income information. Students 24 years or older may attend alone and bring their own completed 2012 tax forms or other 2012 income and benefits information. All events are free and open to the public. ALOHA LUAU FOR MISQUAMICUT

The Misquamicut Business Association will host its eighth annual Aloha Luau at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1 at Venice Ballroom, Shore Road, Westerly. The event will feature food from more than 20 local restaurants, a pig roast and a silent auction. Justin Harris and Mercy Bullets will provide live music for dancing. Proceeds from the luau will support the fireworks, concerts, festivals, car shows, drive-in movies and other family activities held each summer at Misquamicut Beach, and benefit the road crew, which cleans the streets, removes trash and takes on beautification projects. Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Tables are available for $250, includes acknowledgment in the program. KDMF WRITING CONTEST

The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation is now inviting Rhode Island students in grades nine to 12 to participate in a creative writing contest. Those interested may submit short stories, essays and personal narratives ranging from one to four pages on the topic of peer pressure through social media. Entrants should depict a real or fictional situation in which an individual’s presence on Facebook or Twitter influenced another’s behavior and decision-making for better or worse. There is no fee to enter and students may submit as many works as they wish. Prizes ranging from $100 to $1,000 will be awarded to the authors of the best submissions.
