The city of Providence and Hotel Providence will host a winter barbecue to celebrate the city’s “Eighth Coziest City in America” designation by Travel + Leisure Magazine from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 in the outdoor seasonal courtyard at Aspire Seasonal Kitchen, 311 Westminster St., Providence. During the event, Aspire’s courtyard will be adorned with couches, fire pits, heaters, blankets and a kettle drum performer. Hot chocolate and a BBQ lunch will be served. Cost: $5 per person. Special Olympics Rhode Island will host the Torch Run Plunge beginning at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 2 at Goddard Memorial State Park, 1095 Ives Road, Warwick. A post plunge party at The Carousel at Goddard Park with food from Eddie's BBQ and music by Exceptional Wedding DJs will be held. Individual and team costumes are encouraged. Cost: Participants require a $50 minimum to plunge; non-plungers can attend for a $15 donation. YMCA of Greater Providence will host its third annual Community Breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19 at the Crowne Plaza Providence-Warwick, 801 Greenwich Ave., Warwick. This event will kick off the organization’s community campaign to raise charitable funds in support of its mission to help children achieve and improve the health of the community. Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island will be the keynote speaker. A session for networking will be held from 7 to 7:30 a.m. The program begins at 7:30 a.m. and includes breakfast. RSVP by March 14. Sargent Rehabilitation Center will host its fourth annual signature gala, “Dinner is Served…Celebrity Hosts, Extraordinary Cause” from 6 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28 at the Quidnessett Country Club, 950 North Quidnessett Road, North Kingstown. During the event, guests will be waited on by local Rhode Island celebrities and notables, who will compete to win the Silver Service Award. Dinner will be followed by dancing to the music of Mystique along with live and silent auctions. Proceeds will benefit the center’s capital expansion and improvement programs. Cost: $100 per person. The Providence Preservation Society will host its 2014 Winter Bash from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday, March 29 at American Locomotive Works, Third Floor, 555 Valley St., Providence. Guests are encouraged to wear their best high school formal wear to the event, which features punch, balloons, streamers, awkwardly posed photos and more. A VIP Chaperone Party will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cost: $30 per person through March 7; $35 per person after; $40 per person at the door; VIP party: $100 per person.
