Philharmonic gets grant from music foundation

Posted 3/29/13

CRANSTON – The Victoria Alviti Music Foundation has granted $18,000 to the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music School’s FLEX (Foundations in Learning Exploration) with the Phil program.

As part of the grant, every student in the Arlington Elementary School will attend the Philharmonic’s Link Up Education Concerts.

This year is the Philharmonic’s second season with Link Up, developed by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, which provides instruments, curriculum materials, and professional development. Link Up culminates in concerts at Veterans Memorial Auditorium, where students play along with the Philharmonic. Last year, 7,000 students from 60 schools attended four concerts with the program. This year, 10,000 students are expected at six concerts next month.

The Victoria Alviti Music Foundation honors the memory of Victoria Alviti, a Cranston woman who died in a car accident in 2011.

“We are honored by our partnership with the Alviti family,” said David Beauchesne, executive director of the RI Philharmonic Orchestra and Music School, in a statement. “Our goal is to provide ongoing access to quality music education opportunities for every elementary student in the state.”

FLEX with the Phil is designed in consultation with Rhode Island teachers and administrators to complement existing in-school programs while making use of the Orchestra and Music School’s distinctive resources.
