PBN: Can you tell us more about the hospital’s Medical Staff Association and the Distinguished Service Award?

PHIPPS: Each year, our Medical Staff Association, a group comprised of all of the physicians, nurse midwives, and allied health professionals on the Women & Infants Hospital medical staff, honors one physician with a Distinguished Service Award. It is an honor to be recognized by my peers, as I know how fortunate I am to work with the best of the best here at Women & Infants Hospital. Together, we are focused on the mission of the hospital – to provide essential health care services to the women and newborns of our region, regardless of ability to pay.

PBN: As director of the Division of Research at Women & Infants Hospital, what are some of your current research topics/goals?

PHIPPS: Personally, I am involved in multiple studies to understand health outcomes relevant to women, children and families. I am leading a study funded by the National Institutes of Health to prevent postpartum depression in adolescent mothers. I am also the co-principal investigator (along with Stephen Buka, professor of epidemiology at Brown and director of the Center for Population Health and Clinical Epidemiology) for Women & Infants and Brown University’s participation in the National Children’s Study, the largest long-term study of children’s health and development ever conducted in the United States.

PBN: What are some of your other involvements in the medical field beyond Women & Infants Hospital?

PHIPPS: I am actively involved as a faculty member in the departments of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Epidemiology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. … I serve on multiple local and national committees; for example, over the past five years, I have chaired the Rhode Island Task Force on Preterm Births … Other professional organizations include the American Public Health Association, the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved. •
