Phoenix House offers new treatment model

PROVIDENCE – Phoenix House New England recently launched a new treatment model for the treatment of teenagers dealing with substance abuse.

Based on research that shows a positive response among adolescents to positive reinforcement, the I CAN treatment model encourages teens to focus on personal strengths. While the structure of the model are specified and broken down into four stages, the quantity of time that clients remain in each stage varies according to individual needs.

The model cycles through themes throughout a client’s stay, rather than following a more linear treatment regimen. The goal becomes long-term recovery, rather than discharge.

“As New England continues to reel under the effects of a devastating addiction epidemic, resources for adolescent treatment are woefully inadequate,” said Patrick McEneaney, President and CEO, Phoenix House New England. “Phoenix House is responding to this critical need.”

The letters in I CAN stand for “investigate,” “consider,” “acquire,” and “nurture.” A recent therapeutic trip for patients included whitewater rafting in Maine.
