Photography use now allowed in some Newport mansions

NEWPORT – Tourists walking through some of the Newport mansions will now be allowed to capture the beauty of these buildings with the Preservation Society of Newport County’s new photography policies.
The policies will permit those visiting The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House to snap pictures of the interiors with their smart phones for “personal, non-commercial use.” This new rule will go into effect on Feb. 12, amending the previous rule that did not allow any types of photography within the mansions.
“The most common request by visitors to the Newport Mansions is for permission to take interior photographs of the magnificent rooms,” Preservation Society CEO & Executive Director Trudy Coxe said in a news release on Wednesday. “With the explosion of social media and the passage of time that has minimized artistic copyright concerns, we feel the time is now right to relax our photography policy.”
While visitors will now be able to use their devices to capture parts of the mansions, gadgets such as selfie sticks, flash and tripods will still not be allowed. Those using SLR or industrial or commercial video cameras must have prior written permission to do so.
The Preservation Society will be keeping an eye on the practice of this new policy to ensure that it does not inhibit the tour experience. Photo opportunities during particularly busy times may be shortened or limited to prevent a jam of foot traffic. The hope is to extend these new photo policies to include Chateau-sur-Mer and Kingscote if they prove successful in the current mansions, according to a Preservation Society news release.
