EAST GREENWICH – Picerne Military Housing, a division of Corvias Group, broke ground Wednesday in Fort Meade, Md., in the first-ever, public-private partnership to build on-post barracks with the U.S. Army.

The $72 million project, which was announced in mid-December, is designed to give more than 1,400 junior enlisted service members a choice of where to live on post at Ft. Meade.

The community is being built at no cost to the Army, and the 432-apartment project will “greatly improve the quality of life for young, single service members,” according to a Picerne release.

In a previous release, Picerne described the housing project to be named Reece Crossings, as an on-post garden-style apartment community for single enlisted soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. The complex will be comprised of 432 one- and two-bedroom apartments with 816 beds. The project will offer 1,126-square-foot, one-bedroom plus den apartments and 1,186-square-foot two-bedroom apartments.

The groundbreaking took place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Reece Crossings Model Home on Ft. Meade. Speakers included Katerine Hammack, assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and environment; Col. Edward C. Rothstein, Ft. Meade’s garrison commander; John Picerne, CEO of the Corvias Group and Greg Cannito, program manager at Picerne Military Housing.

In the release announcing the original project, Picerne anticipated a completion date of December 2013 for the first apartment building and clubhouse.
