What are the characteristics of a successful leader?

Having a clearly defined mission and a strong conviction that mission comes first. Then, you surround yourself with people who understand the mission and share that passion. Maintaining a principled and consistent company culture starts at the top, and I’m proud to say that is how we operate.

Part of your business model is forming long-term public/private relationships. How was this model implemented to privatize military housing, and later in the higher education sector?

Our long-term partnerships are grounded in mutually agreed-upon goals to ensure we’re working together to solve systemic challenges facing our partners. Over the past year, we’ve further expanded the model beyond raising capital to solve housing problems for college campuses to how we can utilize that capital to help solve larger systemic infrastructure and deferred maintenance challenges.

Can you speak on some of the recent efforts regarding storm water solutions?

We are partnering with Prince George’s County, Maryland, to retrofit its storm water infrastructure, which will help it achieve regulatory compliance while stimulating economic development through local job creation. We have since expanded the program to help communities in other ways, such as protecting their K-12 schools with additional infrastructure improvements.

Why is it important for companies to improve relationships across the public and private sectors?

We bring public officials, local businesses and capital together to create a driving force toward solving the escalating problem of infrastructure maintenance and funding, which will, in turn, make communities stronger. We’re working to combine private sector expertise to solve the public’s problems and break down barriers through our partnerships. •
