PROVIDENCE – A 19th century brick church in the Broadway-Armory Historic District will be renovated into residential lofts, through a $3.1 million project that has qualified for state historical preservation tax credits.
The Pilgrim Congregational Church, at 19-21 Harrison St., will be converted into 15 residential units, including two townhouse-style apartments and four with access to rooftop decks.
Project applicant is Pilgrim Lofts LLC, of New York. The agent who signed the application is Federico Manaigo, identified as project manager. Manaigo, a principal at the development company Knight & Swan LLC, also is pursuing a culinary incubator and residential conversion project at a former West End mill, the Klein Building.
The state Division of Taxation on Thursday announced the Pilgrim Lofts project will qualify for $500,000 in state historical preservation tax credits on completion.
The church, built in 1874, is a three-story, late Victorian-style structure with cast iron Gothic and Moorish details that has been altered over time, according to a project description prepared by the state. The building includes granite and brownstone details, as well.
The original church steeple has been truncated. The structure also has an unoriginal, flat roof. The interior, damaged in a fire, contains little historical details, according to the state. Until recently, the building was used for furniture storage and as a warehouse.
Under the development plan, the exterior of the church will be restored and the windows replaced to match the originals. Four new window openings will be created on the third floor to allow light for the third-floor units.
