Plumbers union receives $131K grant for apprentices

PROVIDENCE – The United Association Local 51 Plumbers and Pipefitters has received a $131,400 Real Jobs RI implementation grant to launch an urban community apprenticeship program.

The grant will connect people of color and the underserved in urban communities through a pre-apprenticeship training program that will lead to full apprenticeships in the plumbing, pipefitter and steamfitter trades, according to a news release.

UA Local 51’s partners in the effort include Progreso Latino, Urban Ventures of Rhode Island, New Commons and Mayforth Group.

The program’s first phase will prepare 10 workers to enter full-time apprenticeships with five professional plumber, pipefitter and refrigeration businesses in the Ocean State, the release said.
