PROVIDENCE – More than 62 percent of respondents in a recently released Brown University poll rated as fair to poor the job that Gov. Gina M. Raimondo is doing, according to the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy.
The poll of a random sample of 600 registered Rhode Island voters was conducted April 19 to 21. It surveyed those voters considered most likely to vote in the presidential primary elections Tuesday.
In addition to asking questions about the primary election candidates, the Taubman Center queried participants on public policy issues.
The question pertaining to Raimondo asked simply “How would you rate the job that Gina Raimondo is doing as governor?”
Of the respondents, 6.5 percent said “excellent,” while 24 percent said “good.” Among respondents who had less favorable answers, 30.2 percent rated her performance as “fair” while 32.5 percent said it was “poor.” Another 0.5 percent didn’t respond to the question.
A question that asked generally “how do you think things are going in Rhode Island” likewise drew a pessimistic response.
Among respondents, 54.2 percent selected “wrong track” while 33.2 percent said the state was heading in the “right direction.” Another 12.7 percent said they didn’t know.
That question, cross-analyzed with demographic data, indicates that wealthier Rhode Islanders have a more pessimistic view. Of those with incomes of $250,000 or more, 70 percent reported the state was on the “wrong track.”
African-American and Latino or Hispanic respondents had a more optimistic response to the question than their white or mixed-race counterparts. Forty-six percent of black respondents and 55.6 percent of Hispanics or Latinos said the state was heading in the right direction.
The poll participants represented a mix of political affiliations. Fifty-three percent identified as being Democrats. Another 30 percent said they were unaffiliated, while 17 percent were Republicans.

  1. The numbers also add up to create this alternate headline:
Poll: 60% of respondents say Raimondo doing fair to excellent job
When given the choice, I choose to see the glass as “half full” as opposed to “half empty.” I wish PBN would choose the same view – it’s for the good of our state!

  2. So who are these people who think she is doing a good job? RI is in a protracted depression. The fake unemployment rate includes part time workers under the new definition of employment means anyone who works even 1hr/week and get paid in money or equivalent such as food can not be compared to the depression of the 30’s and 40’s. But do go to www.shadowstats.com by economist John Williams for the real unemployment rates your government won’t tell you. He lists the U3, U6, and the U9. No wonder so many people are unhappy. The American Dream is gone for most young people.
