Port of Davisville exceeds 2014 auto import total

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Port of Davisville is continuing a pattern of growth in auto imports, having recently surpassed the 2014 vehicle total.
The port, managed by the Quonset Development Corp., imported more than 190,000 automobiles through Oct. 27, surpassing the total of 178,215 in 2014.
It is the sixth consecutive year of growth in auto imports, according to a news release.
The port has a critical advantage in that cargo shipments are not subject to the federal Harbor Maintenance Tax, and the port has available space, according to Quonset Development Corp.
The auto processor and distributor at the port is North Atlantic Distribution Inc.
By mid-November, the 169th international vessel of the year had arrived at Davisville, also breaking last year’s record. In 2014, the port attracted 168 ships.
The port accounts for more than a third of all international ship traffic in Rhode Island ports and terminals. It is consistently among the top 10 auto importers in North America, and its volume of roll-on, roll-off cargo shipments is now five times what it was 15 years ago, according to the port.
