PORTSMOUTH – Historic Portsmouth is celebrating its 375th birthday with a new website, slogan, town logo and year-long celebration.

The town’s new slogan – “Proud Heritage, Bright Future” – was submitted by Gary Gump, the vice chairman of the town’s 375th Celebration Steering Committee.

The slogan, along with a new logo designed by creative design firm Roskelly Inc., will be featured on the town’s official birthday website: www.PortsmouthRI375.com.

Portsmouth resident Thomas Roskelly, of Roskelly Inc., helped the steering committee design the town’s celebration materials, including posters, banners, letterhead and T-shirts.

The logo is a large white P inside a red circle surrounded by the phrase “Celebrating 375 years – established 1638.” The logo also includes the seven stars of the Portsmouth town seal and stands on blue and green hill-like shapes meant to symbolize Portsmouth itself.

“Portsmouth has enjoyed a long and colorful history, settled by such prominent American figures as Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and William Coddington,” said a release announcing the birthday campaign.

“To honor its reputation as the ‘birthplace of American democracy,’ Portsmouth will enjoy a year of activities, including historical re-enactments, lectures, clambakes, fireworks, family picnics, dances, festivals and much more,” added the release.
