PROVIDENCE – The Providence Journal announced that it will start charging Tuesday at 10 a.m. for access to its digital edition, which has been free since October.

The newspaper said it will have 10 subscription options available for its print and e-edition formats. Existing seven-day print subscribers will get access to the e-edition with no additional cost, it said. Free access to the providencejournal.com website will not change.

“We’ve been online since 1995. Today, in print and online, our content is rich with words, pictures, video and audio compiled every day by more than 160 news professionals. Their work is complemented by supplemental services – and robust reader commentary,” said Publisher, President and CEO Howard G. Sutton.

The new subscription options include: seven day, e-edition access for $4 a week; iPad-only, $15.99 a month; weekend-only print subscribers can add the e-edition for $2 extra a week.

The print and digital subscription costs $416 annually; the digital-only version costs $208.

“The printed Providence Journal and Providence Sunday Journal are the cornerstones of our business, delivering essential news and advertising to readers across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts every morning,” Sutton said.

“Meanwhile, our audiences are embracing our new delivery options. Technology has enabled us to meet the market’s demand for immediacy in news and advertising, audio and video, and community commentary,” he said. “The Journal e-edition is a powerful bridge in information delivery — the link between our printed newspaper, with its premium content, and the free providencejournal.com, with its essential fast-moving news and information.”
