Program tackles bullying

PROVIDENCE – The 4-Safety program, a partnership between Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Dunkin’ Donuts, will focus this spring on bullying prevention.
The program works to raise awareness and educate families about ways they can reduce their risk of injury and live healthier, safer lives.
“The topic of bullying prevention is one that cannot be discussed enough,” said Dr. Alison Riese, of Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “The ever-increasing popularity of social media, and the access kids have to these mediums on a daily basis, makes bullying more prevalent than ever. We hope our efforts through the 4-Safety program will help more kids and their families manage it effectively.”
According to Dr. Riese, bullying consists of any aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a power imbalance. This can occur in person or electronically through email, texts, and social media. Witnesses to bullying may struggle like bullying victims do, she said.
“The most important thing is to talk to your children,” added Dr. Riese. “Be involved in their everyday activities and listen to them when they try to tell you something.”
The “4-Safety” van will be at various events throughout the area this spring, including the Rhode Island Home Show at the Rhode Island Convention Center and the Harlem Globetrotters performance at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, to provide information about this topic to families.
