Property, violent crimes dropped in ’14 in Providence

PROVIDENCE – Preliminary data indicates both property and violent crimes dropped in 2014 in Providence, according to a news release. Reported incidents dropped 15 percent, according to Mayor Angel Taveras, Commissioner Steven M. Pare and Police Chief Col. Hugh T. Clements Jr.
Violent crime, which includes murder, sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault, dropped 20 percent. Property crimes, which include burglaries, larceny, and motor vehicle theft, dropped more than 15 percent, officials said.
Reported robberies fell from 2013 by 33 percent. The number of people injured in shootings has declined from 110 in 2011 to 92 in 2014.
“These preliminary numbers are a reflection of the hard work being done throughout the year by Providence police officers, and will continue into 2015,” said Clements, in the release.
