Providence Center’s Anchor ED program earns acclaim from Addiction Policy Forum

PROVIDENCE – The Addiction Policy Forum, a national nonprofit organization that seeks to elevate addiction awareness, recently announced that Anchor ED, a program of The Providence Center, will be featured in the forum’s Focus on Innovation, highlighting innovative programs across the country that contribute to a comprehensive addiction strategy.

Anchor ED connects people who have been admitted to emergency rooms for an opioid-related overdose with trained peer-recovery coaches who can talk with them about recovery support services and help them avoid another overdose. Now available in every hospital in Rhode Island, the program began in 2014 in one hospital, reported The Providence Center, a community behavioral health organization that is affiliated with Care New England.

In August 2016, The Providence Center was named an “Innovation Winner” – one of 10 such companies so recognized that year by Providence Business News, which chose companies for “having a new product or process that has had a significant impact on the marketplace and/or the enterprise.” The Providence Center earned the recognition for the Anchor ED initiative.

“Anchor ED is proud to be recognized for our innovative approaches,” George O’Toole, Anchor ED’s program manager, said in The Providence Center’s statement. “We hope to continue our momentum, improving our program, to help meet the needs of all the people, families and communities affected by the epidemic of opioid overdoses.”
