Providence chef crafts menu for Obama fundraiser

PROVIDENCE – When President Barack Obama visits Rhode Island later this month, he will dine on local and regional cuisine created by one of the state’s top chefs.

John Elkhay, who refers to himself as “maestro” of the Chow Fun Food Group, is creating the menu for the fundraiser that Obama will host on Aug. 29th in Newport for Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Guests will first feast on hors d’oeuvres consisting of local beef sliders, Alaskan salmon tartare with American caviar, Rhode Island clam chowder with cappuccino foam, tuna California maki with soy glaze and short rib corn tacos.

Hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a plated dinner of filet mignon and Maine lobster tail with local parsnip purée and micro vegetables and a plated dessert.

Elkhay said this is a working menu and there may be some tweaks before the event. However, the menu did not have to be approved by the White House.

The menu is crafted by Elkhay and the head chefs from all his restaurants, which include Ten Prime Steak and Sushi, Rick’s Roadhouse, Harry’s Burger Bar, XO Café and Luxe Burger, all located in Providence.

The event will be held at Seafair, the waterfront Newport estate owned by Rhode Island businessman Rick Bready.
