Providence College class gives grants

PROVIDENCE – Providence College students in a philanthropy class recently awarded a total of $10,000 in grants to three nonprofit community organizations in Providence.
Students in the class, “Special Topics in Public and Community Service: Philanthropy,” acted like a board of directors in seeking grant proposals, deliberating on applicants, and selecting recipients. Their mission was to award the money to nonprofits that are working to find long-term, comprehensive solutions to the issue of homelessness in the city.
Grant recipients chosen by this student board included McAuley House, $5,000; Home Base, $2,500; and Omni Development Corporation, $2,500.
There are 21 students in the public and community service studies class taught by special lecturer William Allen, a former executive vice president of United Way of Rhode Island; Dr. Ray Sickinger, professor of history and former director of the PCC’s Feinstein Institute for Public Service; and Mary Alice O’Connor of Rhode Island Campus Compact.
Since 2008, the course has awarded $63,000 grants to nonprofit organizations. The Learning By Giving Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes the teaching of effective charitable giving, provided the funding.
