Providence County beats national average wage

WHILE PROVIDENCE COUNTY recorded an average weekly wage of $898 in the 2011 second quarter, Bristol County, at $687, was nearly 23 percent below the U.S. average.

BOSTON – The average weekly wage in Providence County was $898 in the 2011 second quarter, slightly ahead of the national average, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Tuesday.

At the same time, the average weekly wage in Bristol County, at $687, was nearly 23 percent below the U.S. average for the quarter. Statewide, the average weekly wage was $862.

Counties falling between the Bristol and Providence average weekly wages were: Washington County, $758; Kent County, $800; and Newport County, $863.

Rhode Island employment rose 0.3 percent to 458,100 in June 2011 from a year earlier. The state’s average weekly wage, $862, increased 3.5 percent in the second quarter of 2011 when compared with 2010. Its national ranking by level was 18th, and 12th by percent change.

Providence - Rhode Island’s only “large” county – reported an employment decline of 0.1 percent from June 2010 to June 2011 and accounted for 59 percent of statewide employment.

Nationally, 215 of the 322 “large” counties – defined as those with employment of 75,000 or more – had net job gains from June 2010.

The largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment was in Ottawa, Mich., while San Joaquin, Calif., experienced the largest year-over-year decrease in employment among the large counties in the U.S., the BLS said.
