Providence County had 1.5% employment increase over the year in December

PROVIDENCE – Providence County ranked 235th out of the 342 largest U.S. counties for its 1.5 percent increase in employment from December 2014 to December 2015, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said recently.
Providence County was among 308 counties that had an employment gain over the year in December, but it lagged the national job growth rate for that period of 1.9 percent.

Williamson, Tenn., had the largest percentage increase in the nation with a gain of 6.8 percent over the year. Ector, Texas, had the largest over-the-
year percentage decrease in employment among the largest counties in the U.S., with a loss of 11.8 percent.

National employment reached approximately 141.9 million in December, while it was 286,800 in Providence County, the BLS said.

In the fourth quarter, the U.S. average weekly wage increased 4.4 percent over the year, growing to $1,082. Wyandotte, Kan., had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in average weekly wages with a gain of 10.4 percent.
Midland, Texas, experienced the largest percentage decrease in average weekly wages with a loss of 11.5 percent over the year.

Providence County ranked 254th among the 342 largest counties for its 3.7 percent increase in average weekly wages from fourth quarter 2014 to fourth quarter 2015. The average weekly wage in Providence County was $1,102 in the fourth quarter, higher than the national average weekly wage.

In Rhode Island, the average weekly wage was $1,043 in the fourth quarter, a 4 percent increase compared with the previous fourth quarter.
