PROVIDENCE – Jonathan Nelson is one of the 400 richest Americans, according to Forbes.
Forbes, which released the list this week, put Nelson at No. 353. Nelson, CEO of Providence Equity Partners, has a net worth of $1.97 billion, Forbes said.
He slipped 11 spots from his place last year on the list.
Forbes had this to say about Nelson, who founded the private equity firm in 1989: “Providence sold the Ironman triathlon series for $900 million in the fall of 2015, quadrupling its initial investment. Nelson studied economics at Brown, then got his MBA at Harvard. Today he is a member of Brown’s governing board. In January 2016, he announced a $25 million gift to launch the school’s Jonathan M.Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, which started some classes eight months later.”
Nelson shares space on the list with Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who was first with a net worth of $81 billion. Forbes said he’s been America’s richest person for 23 years.

Jeff Bezos, CEO and founder of Amazon.com, ranks second with a net worth of $67 billion, followed by third place Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, at $65.5 billion, and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg at $55.5 billion. Oracle’s CEO and Founder Larry Ellison rounds out the top five at $49.3 billion.
President and CEO of Fidelity Investments Abigail Johnson, with a net worth of $13.2 billion, comes in at No. 29.
Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, was No. 102 for his net worth of $5.1 billion.
The aggregate net worth of the Forbes 400 is $2.4 trillion, an average of $6 billion per person, Forbes said.
For those wondering, Republican presidential hopeful Donald J. Trump did make the list. Trump placed No. 156 for his $3.7 billion fortune, which slipped $800 million over the past year. Last year, he was No. 121 on the list.
