PROVIDENCE – The Providence Municipal Court will close on Wednesday as a result of the “Day Without a Woman” demonstration, according to an advisory from City Council president Luis Aponte.

Aponte was informed on Tuesday that the demonstration will leave the court too short staffed to open its doors.

Seventy five court cases slated for Wednesday will be rescheduled. Notices concerning new court dates are expected to be mailed early next week, according to a release.

“We are trying to get the word out to everyone who was issued a summons to appear in court or planned to pay fines tomorrow,” said Aponte. “Many people have to take time out of work or find child care well in advance of a court date. We’re working under a tight timeframe to minimize the impact of this decision.”

Any payment received by the court on Wednesday will be processed on Thursday. The court administrator and court officer will be present to assist on all matters, and Aponte has asked the court to ensure that the closure does not impact license suspensions or contribute to late fees.

On “Day Without a Woman,” a national protest that is being coordinated on International Women’s Day, women are encouraged to take the day off from work, avoid shopping and wear red to demonstrate the importance of the contributions of women in the workforce while protesting the wage gap, gender inequality, discrimination and harassment in the workplace and job insecurity.
