Providence Place changes parking rates

PROVIDENCE – Parking at Providence Place may be slightly more expensive for the quick in-and-outers but much cheaper for those marathon shopping excursions during the holiday season.

As of Wednesday at 7 a.m., parking for up to five hours will be $2. That’s changing the old formula of $1 parking for up to 3 hours; $5 for four hours and $7 for five hours.

“It’s the first parking increase in 12 years for the $1 rate,” said spokesman Dante Bellini Jr. of the RDW Group. “We wanted to simplify it and at the same time provide more value.”

“The bottom line is – people who want to do a movie and shopping, typically can’t do that in three hours. This [rate structure] provides much greater latitude.”

“We walk a fine line; when there are events – lots of people want to park [at Providence Place]. We wanted to provide really good value for our patrons [while] being cognizant of the fact that people may use the garage for other downtown activities.”

The rates for extended period of time – 6 to 8 hours, $10, and 8 to 20 hours, $20 – stay the same.

“We continue to be the best value in downtown parking and certainly among the lowest priced urban mall parking in the country,” he added.

Last year, Providence Place had 3 million transactions, Bellini said. “That number speaks to how important the mall garage is to the downtown/Statehouse area.”
