Providence Port gets expansion OK

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Port has received final approval to expand its port and terminal operations to an adjacent 14.5-acre property, through a long-term lease with the city.
The site, a former landfill, is located between existing port property and Save The Bay.
In an agreement reached with the Providence Redevelopment Agency, the port will lease the acreage from Sept. 1, 2015 through July 1, 2036, for $140,000 a year.
The port plans to use 9.3 acres of the land for its expansion. It already had an easement for 2.2 acres of the site. The remaining 3 acres will provide a security buffer and increase public access to the river through the Save The Bay site, according to a press release.
Through its terminal management company, Waterson Terminal Services, the port will spend $1.4 million to prepare the site for expansion. The former landfill has been decommissioned and capped. The property will be cleared, graded, paved and perimeter fencing installed.
ProvPort also expects to spend $300,000 to improve the open space portion of the site.
