Providence-area exports top $7B in 2011

WASHINGTON – Exports from the Providence-Fall River-New Bedford metropolitan area grew 23.3 percent to $7.1 billion from 2010 to 2011, according to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration.

In 2011, the Providence-Fall River-New Bedford area was the 39th largest export market in the U.S.

Key exports for the metro area included manufactured commodities, computer and electronic products, primary metal manufacturing and electrical equipment.

“Exports are an increasingly important part of the Providence metro area’s economy, as local businesses both big and small continue to look beyond our borders to increase their customer base,” Francisco Sánchez, commerce undersecretary for international trade, said in a statement.

“The growth in exports from the Providence metro area is helping to support good jobs throughout the region,” added Sánchez.

The United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France and Switzerland were the top markets for exports out of the Providence metro area.
