PROVIDENCE MADE THE TOP 20 in WalletHub's ranking of the "Best and Worst Foodie Cities for Your Wallet."

PROVIDENCE – Providence is ranked No. 17 on WalletHub’s list of 2015 “Best and Worst Foodie Cities for Your Wallet.”
WalletHub calls “wallet-friendly” cities those in which foodies who like to craft their own concoctions at home or sample edibles from the local food scene find they can stretch their food dollar more easily states.
Providence is also ranked No. 5 for most restaurants per capita, No. 9 for the ratio of full-service restaurants to fast-food outlets, and No. 25 for the number of coffee and tea establishments.
Ranked in order as the top three for affordability and desirability as foodie cities are Portland, Ore.; Orlando, Fla.; and San Francisco.
Coming in at Nos. 148, 149 and 150, respectively, were Fontana, Calif.; North Las Vegas, Nev.; and Moreno Valley, Calif.
WalletHub analysts compared dining-out affordability in 150 of the United States’ most populous cities using 18 metrics that include the cost of groceries to the number of restaurants per capita.
“Despite the fact that food in the U.S. is currently the cheapest it’s ever been,” WalletHub contends, “the National Restaurant Association suggests that a sizeable portion of Americans are still priced out of restaurant dining. According to the report’s findings, 72 percent of consumers would consider eating out more frequently ‘if menu prices were lower’ during less busy hours.”
Providence beat the national average ranking of No. 75 on a number of other categories as well:

  • No. 35 – Number of gourmet specialty-food stores per capita
  • No. 41 – Number of grocery stores per capita
  • No. 48 – Number of ice cream and frozen yogurt shops per capita
  • No. 57 – Number of craft breweries and wineries per capita
