Providence metro ranks 48th for college-educated young adults

CHARLOTTE – The Providence-New Bedford-Fall River area ranks 48th out of 100 for the percentage of college-educated young adults in the metro area, according to an On Numbers analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.

On Numbers, a daily demographic blog from American City Business Journals, compared the population of 18-to-34-year-olds in the metro areas with the number of that demographic who held a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Out of the 361,904 18-to-34-year-olds in the Providence-New Bedford-Fall River metro area in 2010, 81,948, or 22.6 percent, held at least a bachelor’s degree.

Boston had the largest percentage of college-educated young adults in the country - at 39.2 percent – according to the news source.

The Washington metro area ranked second and San Francisco-Oakland ranked third with 37.2 percent and 35.6 percent, respectively, of young adults possessing at least a bachelor’s degree.

Comparatively, the Bakersfield-Delano metro area in California ranked last in the American City Business Journals’ list, with 9.09 percent of 18-to-34-year-old residents possessing at least a bachelor’s degree.
