Providence nonprofit among 30 honored as national models

PROVIDENCE – The Genesis Center is one of 30 nonprofits across the country to be named a “model program” in the National Skills Coalition by Vice President Joseph Biden.
Bestowed in mid-July, the honor signifies that the 30 nonprofits identified by Biden exemplify the type of job-training success expected with President Barack Obama’s signing into law of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, said Donald S. Keel, the center’s president and CEO.
In a release, Keel noted: “The Genesis Center is honored to be one of the local efforts featured as a national model, ‘where the will to achieve meets the skill to succeed.’ The Genesis Center has been educating and enabling people from around the globe, not only how to speak English, but also how to become computer literate, build financial literacy, and make it in the American workplace.”
The center focuses on adult education for immigrants and refugees, childcare and workforce development.
Adult education programs, which include teaching English, survival skills, citizenship, computer skills, health information, math and more, have served more than 600 people, Keel said. In addition, the center has provided childcare programming to nearly 100 children aged 6 weeks to 5 years, and the workforce development programs helped place students in 135 jobs this year.
