Providence one of top cities for shopping local this holiday season

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s capital city is one of the top 20 destinations in the country for shopping local this holiday season, according to a survey by Yelp.
Providence was No. 18. First on the list was Portland, Maine. The third New England city to make the list was Worcester, Mass., at No. 16.
Yelp conducted a survey with Nielsen which found that eight in 10 Americans are likely to shop at local businesses this holiday season, and then analyzed millions of its reviews and business listings to determine the U.S. cities with the most highly rated, local businesses where holiday shoppers could find “great gifts.”
Shopping destinations listed on Yelp include Shoppe Pioneer, a women’s clothing store on South Main Street in Fox Point; Rhode Runner, a sportswear and shoe store on North Main Street in Mount Hope; Bananas, a women’s clothing store on Federal Hill; Providence Place mall downtown; and Frog and Toad, a gift shop on Hope Street on the East Side.
