PROVIDENCE – City homeowners who claim the homestead property tax exemption must re-apply for it by March 15 and must register their car at the same address to qualify under new rules passed by the City Council last year.
The new rules bar absentee landlords from claiming the exemption, which is reserved for owner-occupied properties.
The Providence homestead exemption excludes the first 50 percent of a home’s assessed value from its annual property tax bill.
To reclaim the exemption, homeowners must present a vehicle registration and copy of their Rhode Island driver’s license with their home address or a homeowners or auto insurance policy along with the application, which can be downloaded at
