Providence owners must re-apply for exemption

Posted 2/17/12

PROVIDENCE – City homeowners who claim the homestead property tax exemption must re-apply for it by March 15 and must register their car at the same address to qualify under new rules passed by the City Council last year.

The new rules bar absentee landlords from claiming the exemption, which is reserved for owner-occupied properties.

The Providence homestead exemption excludes the first 50 percent of a home's assessed value from its annual property tax bill.

To reclaim the exemption, homeowners must present a vehicle registration and copy of their Rhode Island driver's license with their home address or a homeowners or auto insurance policy along with the application, which can be downloaded at var bust = Math.floor(89999999*Math.random()+10000000); var millis = new Date().getTime(); var referrer = encodeURIComponent(document.location); // ========== THIS SECTION IS STOP AUTOMATIC REFRESH ========== // document.write(''); // ========== THIS SECTION IS TO INCLUDE AN AUTOMATIC REFRESH EVERY 60 SECONDS ========== document.writeln('');

“Working families count on the homestead tax exemption. I understand the important relief that exemption provides. I strongly urge all resident homeowners to reapply for the tax exemption before the March 15 deadline and ensure that they are in compliance with the new procedures,” said Mayor Angel Taveras. “Providence homeowners have sacrificed a great deal in recent years, but their sacrifice should not subsidize someone else’s tax relief."

The current residential property tax rate is $31.89 on every $1,000 of assessed value.
