PROVIDENCE – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza said the city has entered into a data-sharing partnership with Waze, a free, real-time traffic and navigation app to better address traffic concerns.
Through the Waze Connected Citizens Program, the city will have greater access to real-time traffic patterns, and application users will have more timely and accurate traffic updates.
“I am thrilled to have the city partner with Waze to gain a deeper understanding of real-time conditions,” Elorza said in a statement. “With this program, we will be able to use data to help better address traffic concerns in neighborhoods throughout the city.”

“With the addition of Providence in the Waze Connected Citizens Program, Waze is empowering drivers with real-time data on changing road conditions and closures directly from the city,” Paige Fitzgerald, Waze Connected Citizens’ program manager, said in prepared remarks. “Waze is excited to extend this data exchange to Providence to further optimize local driving experiences in the Northeast.”

Waze has 70 other partners – including Boston – around the world.
Waze, on its website, explained its mission: “We help people create local driving communities that work together to improve the quality of everyone’s daily driving.” Information about road closures and traffic jams can be shared through the app.
