PROVIDENCE – Providence made U.S. News & World Report’s list of the “Best Places to Live” in the United States, coming in at No. 92.
Providence ranked higher than Miami (No. 93) and New York City (No. 96).
Rhode Island’s capital city received an overall score of 5.9 out of 10. The website described it as a “culturally diverse city home to young professionals and artists.”
“Over the past several decades, the city has undergone a dramatic facelift following a period of industrial decline,” U.S. News & World Report said.
U.S. News analyzed 100 of the most populous metro area cities, ranking them on desirability, value, job market, quality of life and net migration. The rankings are intended to help readers make the most informed decisions when choosing where to settle down, it said.
It said the cost of living in Providence is slightly higher than the national average, and that food and transportation costs are higher than what the average American pays. However, it said Providence is family-friendly, with “a fantastic children’s museum,” and has no shortage of nightlife options. It also mentions that it is home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design.
But, Providence ranked lower than other New England cities, such as Portland, Maine (29); Boston (30); Hartford, Conn. (59); Worcester, Mass. (65); Springfield, Mass. (74); and New Haven, Conn. (88).
Denver topped the Best Places to Live list.
