PROVIDENCE – Providence shoppers are frugal: the city ranked No. 5 in a survey of the top 50 coupon cities in the United States.
The data, released Tuesday from RetailMeNot, which offers digital coupons, comes in time for National Coupon Month. In recognition of the month, the company looked at data from cities across the country to determine the most active users of coupons.
The top city for coupon use was New York City, followed by Boston; Philadelphia; Hartford, Conn.; and Providence.
Rounding out the top 10 were Baltimore; Pittsburgh; Washington, D.C.; Tampa; and Buffalo, N.Y.
The worst city for coupon use was Denver. Phoenix, Las Vegas; Memphis, Tenn.; and Houston also were in the bottom five.
RetailMeNot, in its Shoppers Trend Report, revealed that 96 percent of Americans are coupon users. According to data from the survey, the number of Americans who rely on mobile coupons has increased over the last few years, from 4 percent in 2010 to 15 percent in 2014. The study found that over the past four years, printable coupon use has declined quite significantly (58 percent in 2014 compared with 73 percent in 2010).
Based on the level of coupon click activity in ratio with each city’s population, the Northeast was the clear winner, according to RetailMeNot.
In the top 10 active couponing cities, clothing and food categories ranked consistently at the top for click activity, followed by electronics and home and garden.
