City to unveil its 6-10 connector vision

PROVIDENCE – The city’s vision of a reimagined Route 6-10 connector could look like will be presented at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 in a forum arranged by the Providence Planning Department.
Whether it will be constructed in that manner is an open question.
The public meeting will be at the Doorley Building meeting room, at 444 Westminster St., Providence. An invitation distributed by the Planning Department on Tuesday refers to draft plans being presented, which will incorporate participant feedback from the city’s public workshop on reinventing the connector held in August.
Gov. Gina M. Raimondo earlier this month upended the city’s planning process when she announced she would direct the R.I. Department of Transportation to immediately initiate replacement of the 6-10 connector, a series of nine bridges and elevated roadways that divide some of Providence’s neighborhoods.
The decision, she said, was based on a determination from federal highway officials that a key component of the span, the Huntington Avenue viaduct bridge, is deteriorating rapidly.
At the time, Raimondo said the city would have 60 more days to conclude its feedback process.
