NORTH KINGSTOWN - The Quonset Development Corporation issued a public Request for Proposals this week as they search for a qualified company to provide terminal services at the Port of Davisville.
The chosen company will provide container handling, receiving and staging on Terminal 2 at the port.
The QDC has been nearing completion of several terminal improvements to the port, which were financed by a $22.3 million TIGER grant from the U.S. Maritime Administration.
The grant funded a new mobile harbor crane and more than 3.5 acres of platform improvements to the Pier 2 loading area, among other projects.
The TIGER upgrades are expected to increase business and the new crane was the last step the port had to take in order to become active in the short sea shipping industry, according to a release.
A legislative report from earlier this year estimated the market for container shipping volume at Davisville to be 20,000 units per year, according to the QDC. The Port of Davisville is the 7th largest auto importer in North America. It handles more than 150,000 automobiles annually.
