Quonset Air Museum must repair or relocate

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Quonset Air Museum officials have six more months to either repair the facility or relocate the museum. The building was ordered condemned by airport officials in March, after heavy snowfall partially collapsed the structure.
The R.I. Airport Corporation this week agreed to give the museum a six-month extension to determine how to proceed with the facility, according to spokeswoman Patti Goldstein.
“We’re brainstorming,” she said. “The parties are meeting.”
The museum, which has an extensive collection of aviation artifacts, including 28 aircraft, has been temporarily closed since the events. Founded in 1992, it is located at Quonset State Airport in an original Naval Air Station Quonset Point hangar built in 1945.
State elected officials had pressed airport officials to give museum volunteers more time to examine options.
“It remains to be seen if the museum can be relocated or if enough funds can be raised to rebuild the existing structure,” said Sen. James C. Sheehan, D-North Kingstown, in a news release.
