PROVIDENCE – Gas prices in Rhode Island and Massachusetts dropped another 4 cents this week, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas in Rhode Island averaged $3.65 in the July 28 survey, 4 cents lower than the price a week ago. Similarly, in Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular was 4 cents lower at $3.59 per gallon.

A year ago, the same gas cost $3.80 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.71 per gallon in Massachusetts.

“Driving vacations to destinations near and far are always popular with New Englanders, but never more so than during the summer,” said Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs for AAA Southern New England. “Lower gas prices make those trips more enjoyable and give travelers more money to spend at restaurants and attractions.”

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price from $3.33 to $3.88 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.87 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.96 for both premium unleaded and diesel.

The price range for self-serve, unleaded regular in Massachusetts went from $3.42 to $3.90 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.77 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.90 per gallon, and diesel posted an average price of $3.93 per gallon.

The national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular dropped 5 cents this week to $3.52, 13 cents less than the Rhode Island average and 7 cents less than Massachusetts’ average.
