R.I. 1 of 2 states to lose population in 2012

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is one of only two states that lost population in 2011-2012, according to a new report by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Rhode Island’s population fell by 354 during the year ended June 30, reducing the Ocean State’s population to 1,050,292, a decline of 0.03 percent from June 2011.

Vermont was the only other state to lose residents year over year in June, and its population dropped by 581, or 0.09 percent.

According to the Census Bureau, there were 10,706 babies born in Rhode Island from July 2011 to June 2012. During that time, 9,263 residents died, 5,340 residents left for other states and 3,553 immigrants moved to the Ocean State from other countries. All told, Rhode Island lost 354 residents from July 2011 to June 2012.

Neighboring Massachusetts saw its population rise 0.9 percent from July 2011 to June 2012, with a gain of 39,141 residents.

North Dakota was the fastest growing state this year and the population rose by 2.2 percent.
