R.I. Board of Education approves strategic plan

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s Board of Education has approved a five-year strategic plan intended to better prepare students across the public education system and make the state more competitive.
The 2015-2020 Rhode Island Strategic Plan for Public Education encompasses pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 and adult education, postsecondary education and a section that covers the intersection of those three areas.
For youth and adult education, priorities include early childhood education, personalized learning statewide, global competency, informed instructional decision-making, teacher and leader support and student-centered resource investments.
For higher education, areas of focus include access and affordability, higher attainment, a prosperous economy and effective institutions.
Areas of joint work between the R.I. Department of Education and the Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner include workforce readiness, early college access and teacher preparation.
Barbara S. Cottam, chair of the Board of Education, said the plan will promote excellence as all educators work to “align elementary and secondary and postsecondary strategies” and devote resources to prepare students academically and for career goals.
Said Gov. Gina M. Raimondo, “This plan – the first such plan in our state to encompass the entire spectrum of public education – establishes a framework, including values, goals and measurable objectives that will keep us focused on preparing our students to lead successful and productive lives so as to bolster the prosperity of Rhode Island.”
The plan is posted on the RIDE website, athttp://media.ride.ri.gov/BOE/BOE_Meeting_102815/Encl6a.pdf.
