R.I. Business Group on Health holds diabetes prevention summit

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Business Group on Health, a nonprofit membership organization that represents Rhode Island businesses on health issues, is sponsoring a Jan. 20 diabetes prevention summit, “Sugar Rush: The Not So Sweet Truth About How Much Diabetes Costs Rhode Island Businesses.” According to RIBGH, of the more than 109,000 Rhode Island adults with diabetes, nearly 30,000 of them are unaware of their condition. Rhode Island’s estimated health care expenditures in 2014 for insured adults with diabetes was $617 million, reported RIBGH.

Event speakers are industry experts with knowledge of available programs and resources and local employers successfully addressing this dilemma. They include Dr. Osama Hamdy, medical director of Joslin Diabetes Center’s Obesity Program in Boston, Mass., who will give the keynote address. Other presenters include Edward Aberger, Abacus Health Group’s founder and senior vice president; Dr. Susan Andrews, General Dynamics Electric Boat’s site medical director; Lee Grossi, administrator of finance at Children’s Friend; Neta Taylor Post, vice president, strategic initiatives at YMCA of Greater Providence; Amy Pryor, benefits manager at Amica [Mutual Insurance Co.]; and Dr. Dana Sparhawk, medical director of Lifespan employee and occupational health.

The event, which is free for RIBGH members (the number of complimentary tickets available to any individual company depends on the number of employees in Rhode Island) and $40 per person from non-member companies, is scheduled from 7:30–11:30 a.m. at the Providence Marriott Downtown at 1 Orms St. in Providence.
