PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Business Plan Competition named on Tuesday the 16 semi-finalists that will vie for a portion of the $250,000 prize pot.
The competition received 103 applications, a 69 percent increase from a year earlier.
Finalists will be selected later this month and the winners will be announced on May 3 at RIBX, formerly the Business Expo 2011, in Providence. All finalists will be invited to present their business plans at the expo.
Winners of the entrepreneur track and the student track will receive $25,000 in cash and $28,000 of services; two finalists in each category will earn $5,000 and $9,500 in services.
One “green-oriented” winner will take home $25,000 in cash and $32,000 in services.
Additional prizes include a $25,000 cash bonus to one of the three winners – either in the entrepreneur, student or green-oriented categories; office space, valued at $5,000, will be awarded to one of the winners or finalists.
In order to receive the prizes, finalists and winners must agree to establish or continue operations in Rhode Island, organizers said.
