R.I. Community Food Bank raises more than $132K at Truck Stop benefit

PROVIDENCE – More than 500 people attended the sold-out Rhode Island Community Food Bank Truck Stop event April 29 and helped raise more than $132,000 to fight hunger and aid Rhode Islanders in need.

Food Bank CEO Andrew Schiff said: “Every dollar raised allows us to provide three meals to neighbors in need.”

Revenue raised at the April 29 event will fund 400,000 meals for the 60,000 people who utilize the services provided by Rhode Island Community Food Bank each month, he added.

Attendees included Gov. Gina M. Raimondo, First Gentleman Andy Moffit, Congressman David N. Cicilline and Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza.

Truck Stop saw 15 of the area’s best gourmet food trucks converge on the Providence Rink during the Eat Drink RI weekend-long festivities showcasing chefs, entrepreneurs and restaurants. The event was sponsored by Stop & Shop, IGT and others.

Citizen Wing, Ellie’s Bakery, Friskie Fries, Fugo, Gilded Tomato, Gotta Q, Like No Udder, Mijos Tacos, Noble Knots, O’Crepe, Pat’s Pastured, Presto Strange O, Rocket Fine Street Food, SoulFull, Tallulah’s Taqueria, Jonathan Edwards Winery, Revival Brewing Co. and Yacht Club Soda were among the vendors.

Live music was performed by Superchief Trio.

As a member of Feeding America, and with the help of 167 local member agencies, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank distributes food to 60,000 Rhode Islanders in need each month. In addition to buying low-cost food from wholesalers, donations are solicited from the food industry, supermarkets, manufacturers, growers and the public. A total of 9.7 million pounds of food was served to Rhode Islanders by the Food Bank in 2015.
