R.I. Council for the Humanities taps Francis as new director

ELIZABETH FRANCIS, former director of corporate and foundation relations at Brown University, will take over as executive director of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities in mid-January.

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities has announced Elizabeth Francis as its new executive director.

Francis, who will begin in mid-January, will replace Mary-Kim Arnold, who has held the executive director position since 2007.

Arnold is leaving her five-year post at the Council for the Humanities in order to join the staff of The Rhode Island Foundation.

“Rhode Island Council for the Humanities is well-known not only as a funder of but as an advocate for projects and organizations that inspire and engage people throughout the state,” Francis said in prepared remarks.

“I look forward to building on these strengths and to expanding our ability to help bring Rhode Island’s vibrant heritages to light, to catalyze innovation, and contribute to the state’s progress and development,” added Francis.

According to a release, Francis comes to the council with a background in fundraising, education and history.

Prior to this position, she was the director of corporate and foundation relations at Brown University.
