R.I. FEMA centers to close

THE FEMA disaster recovery centers set up in Westerly and Middletown after Hurricane Sandy will close permanently on Friday.

WARWICK – The Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster recovery centers in Westerly and Middletown that were opened to help Rhode Islanders recover from Hurricane Sandy will close on Friday, FEMA announced Wednesday

The Westerly office, at 65 Crandall Ave., will be converted into a U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loan outreach center starting on Monday, Dec. 10.

The SBA provides low-interest loans to the owners of homes, businesses and nonprofit groups for disaster-related costs that aren’t covered by their previous insurance.

Approved Rhode Island homeowners can borrow up to $200,000 and businesses and nonprofits can get loans up to $2 million.

Rhode Islanders who were affected by Hurricane Sandy do not need to visit a recovery center to register for disaster aid and registration remains open until Jan. 14, 2013.
